Veterans and residents from across Iowa gathered in Keokuk on Thursday to celebrate the unveiling of the “Road of Honor,” a newly revitalized stretch of South 18th Street leading to the Keokuk National Cemetery.

The long-anticipated project, made possible through federal funding in 2022, was designed to improve access to Iowa’s only national cemetery and to pay tribute to the veterans laid to rest there.

Mayor Kathie Mahoney called the unveiling a “surreal moment.”

Former Iowa Rep. Christina Bohannan, a member of the Road of Honor Committee and a current congressional candidate seeking to unseat U.S. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, said she first became aware of the road’s condition during her initial campaign for Iowa’s 1st Congressional District.

“I started pushing,” Bohannan said. “I wrote an open letter to the president, to our governor and to other elected leaders and I said, ‘There is money.’ If we can have money for all of these other crazy things that we see getting funded, we can definitely fund this.”

Bohannan said that in previous discussions with city officials, the lack of funding had always been a barrier.

“Now that the project’s done, it’s a win no matter what party you support,” she said. “This should not be a political issue—it certainly should not be a partisan issue. These veterans died for all of us, for our freedom.”
