MILLER-MEEKS LETS HEALTH INSURANCE PREMIUMS SKYROCKET, REFUSES TO EXTEND PREMIUM TAX CREDITS
Despite Bipartisan Support to Extend Credits, Rep. Miller-Meeks Sides with Insurance and Drug Companies, Washington Special Interests
Iowa City, IA – Today, a discharge petition in the US House received the required number of signatures to force a vote on fully extending the Affordable Care Act. Despite Republican support, Rep. Miller-Meeks refused to sign, even as the cost of premiums is set to double or even triple for Iowa families when the subsidies expire at the end of the year.
Instead of preventing the premium increases for her constituents, Miller-Meeks’ “solution” was to write a competing plan that allows the Affordable Care Act tax credits to expire and kicks 100,000 more Americans off their healthcare. As a result, a couple in Iowa’s 1st district receiving the ACA tax credits could see their premiums rise by more than $1,400 each month.
Rep. Miller-Meeks supports her own bill backed by party elites, a piece of political theater that would do nothing to make healthcare more affordable, even if it did pass–which it will not.
“This is just one more instance of Rep. Miller-Meeks siding with her corporate backers and Washington special interests, putting their profits ahead of Iowa families yet again,” said Christina Bohannan. “If she worked on behalf of Iowans, Miller-Meeks would have signed on to this petition and fully extended the Affordable Care Act, which has been a lifeline for Iowans as health care costs skyrocket and inflation takes a massive toll on household budgets. It’s time someone put Iowans first.”

Iowa’s 1st Congressional District contains the cities of Davenport, Iowa City, Burlington, and Indianola. Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks faces a rematch against Christina Bohannan, who came within 0.2% of defeating the incumbent in 2024. Bohannan lost by just 799 votes out of 413,000 and outperformed the top of the ticket by over 8 points – more than any other Red-to-Blue candidate in the country. National forecasters, including the Cook Political Report, universally rate this district as a Toss-Up for 2026. With Rep. Miller-Meeks showing historic weakness at just 31% favorability and facing growing opposition even within her own party, Bohannan has the best opportunity to flip a Republican seat in the country.
